PATYS: A Hard Lesson from a Tragedy

PATYS: Pay Attention To Your Surroundings

Some may say it’s too soon, but I disagree.

Watching the horrific footage of Iryna Zarutska being brutally murdered on a train in Charlotte, NC, I immediately noticed something that many would not. See, my brain works a little differently from some.

My time in the Army was mostly during peacetime, and I was never deployed to a war zone or conflict. I wasn’t an operator—not a door kicker by any means. I worked in the motor pool and mostly had a good time at the taxpayers’ expense. However, I learned so many great lessons and developed life skills through my training and mentorships.

One of the most important skills—or rather, practices—I learned (and constantly drill into my family) was this:

Pay Attention To Your Surroundings (PATYS)

Unfortunately, the world we live in is full of constant, potential dangers. You cannot assume everything is okay or that you’re safe just because you’re surrounded by people.

Iryna appeared to think she was safe—sitting on a public transit train, surrounded by others. She had just sat down with her earbuds in, looking at her phone, apparently believing there was safety in numbers. Or more likely, she wasn’t even thinking about safety. She escaped a war-torn Ukraine to the assumed safety of America.

Nobody can say for sure, but I believe that if she had been vigilant—if she had positioned herself so that she could see the people around her—she might have had a better chance at defending herself.

I am so saddened by her needless death. When I see that footage, I don’t just see a stranger—I see one of my children… or my wife… sitting on that train.

I hope and pray they would know, from Dad’s constant (and often annoying) lessons, to sit in that seat sideways—with their back against the window—eyes up and scanning.

I know it sounds insensitive. I know it sounds negative.

But we must assume that anyone around us is a potential bad guy.

Get your Ballot In!

I haven’t posted much in the past week or so. The reason being, I’ve been busy! Between struggling to make sure the boys are doing their school work, making candles, and keeping the house in one piece, I have been working the polls for early voting.

It has been a huge turnout! If you know me, you probably know I won’t usually get into partisan discussions much. I figure we’re all adults and smart enough to make our own educated decisions. However, I urge you all to get to the polls and VOTE! All of our, and our children’s futures depend on it. Have a blessed day.

Cedartown Holiday Market

I am excited to announce that Bearded Homeschool Mom will be participating in this year’s Cedartown Farmer’s Market “Holiday Market.” We will have our candles and melts for all to enjoy. I have never done anything like this so pray that I will be prepared. Please stop by our booth and say hi. I will list the dates below. I will not personally be there on opening day, Tuesday, November 5, but my children will be operating the booth. That date may ring a bell for you because it’s also Election Day, and I am working the polls. I look forward to seeing many friendly faces and meeting new people.

Holiday Market Tuesdays 2-5pm

Nov. 5, 12, & 19 and Dec. 3, 10, & 15

Super Small Batch

I have these two soy 12oz. soy candles, set in festive dollar store mugs. The black skull is Candy Corn, and the pumpkin is Caramel Pumpkin Swirl.

I have talked about some of the benefits of soy wax over paraffin, but one of my favorite things is that soy wax is incredibly easy to clean. Once the candles are used up, just wash the container and repurpose.

Message me if you’re interested.

SOUP! A Homeschool Win

Earlier this morning I posted an invitation on the socials to join us in reading the New Testament in The Bible Recap. My wife and I are on our third year through the Bible, while Mac and Liam are on their second year. It makes us happy to know that our two boys have read the entire Bible by the time they were 8 and 11 respectively. This little story just brought it home for me.

I was leading our homeschool group’s class this morning and we were playing a review game. Bible is one of the categories and while we do teach biblical principles and some scripture on community day, most of their Bible knowledge comes from what they learn in their homes and churches. I asked my question, “how did Jacob steal Essau’s birthright.” Instantly, Mac yelled “soup!” While it wasn’t the weird goat hair answer I was looking for, he wasn’t wrong. Homeschool win!

Candles?

I fell into candle making much the same as I do any other new endeavor. I like to learn how to make things that we use in our daily lives. We eat a lot of bread, so I learned how to bake. We like vegetables, so I tried to learn gardening. As it turns out, I am not a good gardener, but I did learn how to make great pickles and jams! We burn a lot of candles and I figured I could make our own cheaper and better, and if I sold enough to offset the cost of supplies and help supplement the costs of homeschooling, it would be a win-win situation.

I’m just a normal guy. I like camping, fishing, hunting, football, etc. Like many other GenXers, I’m a bit of a prepper; not a fanatic, just an enthusiast. I do not expect the world to come crashing down any minute, but I’m always wondering “what if.” We (the world) do have a way of messing up a good thing. I do know it will all end one day just as God said, but that will be a welcome new beginning, and I guess you could say I am prepped for that by accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

That’s all I have to say right now. I just figured I’d explain a little how a super manly man such as myself gets into the things I do.

Leah said I need to post pictures when I update the site, so here is a random picture of us at a Braves game.
